"When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives ..." -James 4:3구하여도 받지 못함은 정욕으로 쓰려고 잘못 구함이니라 (약 4:3)It shouldn't be difficult to ask for God's guidance, should it? The Bible tells us we simply have to ask. And yet it's amazing how often we end up feeling lost in the fog as we search for God's direction. James explains that not every prayer gets the same response from God. Sometimes we might ask and not receive because we ask with wrong motives. After all, how can we expect God to grant our requests if our motives are sinful? James's warning about asking "with wrong motives" raises an important question. When we pray, we need to ask, "Just why am I making these requests?" Speaking personally, I know that some of my requests come from a desire to see God's work grow in my life. But often I may ask for those same things because I want to look good or I want to avoid some of the challenging faith-building experiences he can put before me. All too often our requests are motivated by things like pride or revenge. For example, maybe you want your sister to see that you can be successful, or maybe you want to show your ex-spouse that you can still have a life. Why are you asking what you are asking of God? PRYER (기도) Lord,  help us to ask for the things you long to give to us. We pray this in your name. Amen.

    OCHJanuary 09, 2023 (약 4:1) WHAT'S THE PROBLEM?
"What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don't they come from your desires that battle within you?" (약 4:1)We all have experienced it worn out at the end of the day, seeking some calm and rest at home. But then shalom in the home doesn't happen. The kids may be yelling at each other, or no comfort food is available, or you find that you have to deal with a clogged toilet. Can't I have a little peace around here?" you mutter in frustration. You cannot find the peace you want because of unfilled desires in your heart. In fact, most conflict comes from unmet wants in your innermost being, a lack of satisfaction with what you have." Some desires - such as greed, revenge, and lust - are obviously wrong. Other desires are good - such as a loving spouse, obedient children, loyal friends, and a good-paying job. But even the good desires can become sources of conflict when they take control of our thinking, deciding, and feeling. Watch out when "I desire" becomes "I need" or "I deserve" and then "I demand"- and then "I will attack anyone who gets in my way." We must ask ourselves two questions: Is my desire for God's presence, love, and power greater than anything else? And are my wants the same as what God wants for my life? Paul testified. "I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation --- I can do all this through him who gives me strength"(Philippians 4:12-13). 내게 능력 주시는 자 안에서 내가 모든 것을 할 수 있느니라"(빌 4:12-13) 라고 증거했습니다.PRAYER (기도)Lord, forgive me for selfish desires that resulted in fights with others. Empty my heart of demands and show me how to find peace in all you want me to do. Amen.

"Peacemakers who saw in peace reap a harvest of righteousness"(James 3:18)"화평하게 하는 자들은 화평으로 심어 의의 열매를 거두느니라 (약 3:18)Peace is so much more than an absence of conflict. Peace involves people and systems working in harmony together. Peace is an existence full of well-being, in which our bodies, our relationships, our environment, and even our governments and economies are healthy. Peace even grows righteousness, which brings flourishing and justice for all. Where there is righteousness, people treat each other with love, patience, and all other virtues. Peace is an existence we dream of, which Jesus promised to bring us. Peace is not here yet. But we can have tastes of it. We can even build little communities of it for a time. The Holy Spirit built a community of peace among the early Christians (see Acts 2:42-47; 4:32-37). And some examples today include Christians living in "intentional communities" together. Sometimes our calling and our God-given responsibilities in this world prevent us from creating a community where we can live mainly with others who share our desire for peace. But we can learn a lot from such communities, and we can be peacemakers in the world at large. Where do you see a lack of peace in the community you are a part of, and what can you do to sow some peace there? Do you already know how to do that? Whom could you learn from? Prayer (기도)Lord Jesus, come quickly to bring your peace forever. In the meantime, teach us practical ways to be peacemakers where we are today. Amen.

The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell. - James 3:6    혀는 곧 불이요 불의의 세계라 혀는 우리 지체 중에서 온 몸을 더럽히고 삶의 수레바퀴를 불사르나니 그 사르는 것이 지옥 불에서 나느니라 (약 3:6)Here is a prayer I need to say more often: "Lord, make my words sweet and tender, because I may have to eat them." How many times has my mouth gotten me into trouble with others?!얼마나 여러차례나 저의 입에서 나오는 말들이 저를 다른 사람들과 어려운 관계로 몰아넣었던가요?!James agrees, calling our tongues "a restless evil, full of deadly poison." A biting criticism, a careless remark, a sarcastic comment will separate you from your friends and wound the people around you. Inflammatory words will damage relationships. God is the great communicator. The Bible is the record of his speaking at many times and in various ways, finally and supremely through his son. And we are made in his image to communicate with him and with the other people he has made in his likeness. He speaks to us in holiness and love and blessing. We like to respond to God with words of praise and thankfulness. But we too often speak to others with cursing, slender, and rage. Their reaction to our words usually is returned in the same angry way. Then fighting breaks out. "No human being can tame the tongue," James writes. No person can, but God is able! Let's submit our tongues to our Redeemer, who can teach us how to transform our foolish words into blessings like his. Then peace will flourish. Prayer (기도)O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer, let the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in your sight.(See Psalm 19:14) Amen.

OCHNovember 28, 2022 (약 2:14-26) FAITH AND ACTIONS 믿음과 행함
Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead - James 2:17이와 같이 행함이 없는 믿음은 그 자체가 죽은 것이라 (약 2:17)How do faith and actions (good works, obedience) fit together? While recognizing that salvation is completely a gift from God, including the faith necessary for believing in Jesus as Savior, the Reformers were sometimes troubled by James's teaching about faith and actions. For a while, Martin Luther was so adamant about justification through faith alone that he doubted the book of James even belonged in the Bible because of its emphasis on actions and faith. But other Reformers maintained that the importance of grateful actions as a demonstration of faith and a proof against hypocrisy show that James delivers a clear and authoritative word from God. Perhaps it can help to say, as some have said, "Faith is the beginning of obedience, and obedience is the completion of faith." That resonates with Ephesians 2:10, where Paul, after teaching that we are saved by grace through faith, adds that we are "created in Christ Jesus to do good works." In other words, a natural result of the Spirit's work to bring us of faith in the loving God is no respond by showing thanks to God and by sharing his love with others. So good works are a natural outcome of faith. Thankful works and obedience can also be a helpful indicator of our growth as Christ followers. In what ways are you showing God's love lately? 여러분은 최근에 어떤 면에서 하나님의 사랑을 보이고 있습니까?PRYER (기도)Father, you have provided for our salvation in Jesus. Please help us also to show your love and share your good news with others always. Amen.

OCHNovember 09, 2022 (약 2:8-13) BIG OR SMALL 크든지 작든지
"Speak and act as those who are going to be judged by the law that gives freedom, because judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment!" (약 2:12-13)"Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool." (사 1:18)Little Mary came crying to her mother: "Johnny splashed mud on my white dress again!" Mom scolded the little brother, saying, "Johnny, why did you do that?" He argued, Mom, it's only a few tiny spots this time; it's not a big deal." Mom said, "Whether it has a few spots or a big stain, Mary's white dress is changed completely. It's not white any more." Often we are like Johnny; we try to trivialize our wrongdoing. We even project our thinking onto God. James wrote about showing favoritism to certain people while ignoring or putting down others. It's easy to think that favoritism is no big deal and that many other sins are more serious or offensive to God. But James pointed out that even one sin makes us guilty. I once heard this memorable saying from an old preacher: "No sin is too heavy for Christ to bear, and no sin is too light for Christ to spare." Committing one sin is already too many! How then can we be saved? Is there any hope? Yes! Our salvation is secured by the sacrificial death of our Lord Jesus Christ(1 John 2:1-2). He shed his blood to pay the price for all of our sins, whether they are big or small in our human eyes. Have you experienced that salvation and forgiveness that come only through Christ?여러분은 그리스도를 통하여 오는 구원과 용서를 경험하셨습니까?PRAYER (기도)Thank you, Jesus, for paying the debt of all our sins. Help us to live worthy of your sacrifice. In your name we pray. Amen.

OCHOctober 25, 2022 (약 2:1-7) ACCEPTANCE WITH NO FAVORITISM 편애 없는 용납
Believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ must not show favoritism. - James 2:1내 형제들아 영광의 주 곧 우리 주 예수 그리스도에 대한 믿음을 너희가 가졌으니 사람을 차별하여 대하지 말라 (약 2:1) The Bible makes clear that believers in Christ, enjoying the gift of God's acceptance by grace, may not show favoritism, treating some people as better or more worthy than others. This follows from God's own practice of accepting all who call on his name (see Acts 10:34-35; Romans 10:9-13). 이것은 하나님의 이름을 부르는 모든 자를 용납하시는 하나님 자신의 관례를 따르는 것입니다.(참조, 행 10:34-35, 롬 10:9-13).James gives a specific example about favoritism in action, showing that there is no room for discrimination in God's kingdom. He adds, "If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, 'Love your neighbor as yourself,' you are doing right." We must not miss this: Loving means accepting one another! We accept others when we make room at our table or in our circle of friends for someone we may not know. It's more  than being friendly. Jesus said, "Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me" (Matthew 10:40). Jesus identified with people who were poor, hungry, strangers, sick, and in prison. We must do this too. Loving one another means getting involved in the lives of others ㅡ as messy as that may be. It could involve inviting someone to join a Bible study at your home. It could even be uncomfortable. But you can do so, remembering that few are offended by Jesus. Accepting one another as Jesus did honors God and brings rejoicing in heaven. To whom can you show God's love today? PRYER (기도)Lord, help us to follow your example and seek your kingdom in the way we love one another, whatever may be involved. We want to honor you in all we do. Amen.

OCHOctober 10, 2022 (약 1:22-27) SUPPORT FOR SINGLE PARENTS 싱글 부모에 대한 지원
Religion that --- [is] pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress. ㅡ James 1:27정결하고 더러움이 없는 경건은 곧 고아와 과부를 그 환난 중에 돌보고 --- (약 1:22-27) According to a recent newsflash, four out of every ten children in our culture are living in homes without their father. Close to half of all children in the United States are being raised by single parents or find themselves part of a "blended" family. The so-called nuclear family consisting of two parents and their children is no longer the norm. Single parents face many challenges. Single parents have to accomplish on their own what often is a challenge for two parents. Without a partner, however, they need emotional support. Some single parents find themselves deep in debt and often face financial hardship. Some no longer feel accepted by former friends because their partner is gone. Single parents need the help of the Christian community. In the Old Testament God made provisions for widows and orphans. James calls us to put our faith into practice by reaching out to them. Had James been writing today, he would have included single parents and their children too. You and I may need to step in and help. Look around in your church for such needs and offer assistance. you can help care for young children, accept single-parent families into fellowship groups, and provide financial assistance. In the church everyone should be accepted and included. 교회 안에서는 모든 사람이 받아들여지고 포함되어야 합니다.PRAYER (기도)Lord, help us as members of your church to reach out to all who stand alone as they raise their children, and give us all the grace to accept and learn from each other. In Jesus, Amen.

    OCHSeptember 26, 2022 (약 1:19-21) 더 원하는 허기 (HUNGRY FOR MORE)
Therefore, get rid of all moral fifth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you. At the mission conference that I mentioned yesterday, we were able to hand out almost 20,000 booklets and CD/DVDs to Christians from China. At times there were long lines of people waiting for materials. I had not seen anything like that before; spiritual hunger was obviously present. Afterward I wondered why we do not see this more often. Maybe we have forgotten the apostle Peter's advice to be "like newborn babies," who "crave pure spiritual milk"(1 peter 2:2). Maybe we think that because we have heard it before, we know it already. But that would be a big mistake. We would be assuming that we don't need to grow in Christ(see 2 Peter 3:18). James urges us to "humbly accept the world planted in you" and to "do what it says." We can't do what the Word of God says, though, if we don't read from it, here it preached, and learn what it means for our lives. Hebrews 4:12 says, "The word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit--- it judges the thoughts and attitudes of that heart." God's Word can make us really uncomfortable at times. Like a mirror, it can show us clearly who we are. But we need that. Have you read the Bible today? What have you learned about God and about yourself? PRAYER (기도)Father, thank you for giving us your Word. Help us develop an appetite for it, to learn from it always, and to put it into practice every day. In Jesus' name, Amen.

"--- but  each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed." - James 1:14"--- 오직 각 사람이 시험을 받는 것은 자기 욕심에 끌려 미혹됨이니" (약 1:14) A good friend of mine is a skillful fisherman. He has told me many times that the reason why I am not good at fishing is because I lack the patience. He said that when the flesh sees the live bait, the fish will not bite on it the first time. Instead, it will hit the bait lightly to see if there is any reaction or danger. If I pull the pole immediately, I will get nothing. But if the fish sees that nothing happens, it will think that the bait is safe to bite. That's when I should pull the pole. Temptations are like that too. They look so harmless at first. Don't believe it when people say that using drugs occasionally will not become an addiction, or that you can always get out of an extramarital affair if you want. James says that if we allow ourselves to be "dragged away and enticed," then our "desire --- gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death." By the time we realize there is something wrong, it is already too late. Paul told Timothy to "flee --- evil desires." Run away from them, just as Joseph ran away from Potiphar's wife when she tried to seduce him(Genesis 39). Don't even look back; don't give Satan a chance. Deep down we all know the areas in which we are most prone to fall into temptation. Take Paul's advice and stay far away from them. 바울의 충고를 받아들여 그런 약점을 피하십시오.PRAYER (기도)Father, forgive us for falling into temptations so easily. Holy Spirit, help us not to see, listen, think, or do things that are displeasing to you. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

When you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. -James 1:6오직 믿음으로 구하고 조금도 의심하지 말라 의심하는 자는 마치 바람에 밀려 요동하는 바다 물결 같으니 (약 1:6)As a child I often played a game with friends in which one player would be trying to find someone or something. The rest of us would try to guide the "seeker" by saying how "warm" or "cold" they were getting. The closer they got to the target, the "warmer" they would be; but when they started to stray in the wrong direction, we'd warn them that they were getting "colder." Sometimes we try to play that game with God. We pray for guidance, but what we really want is God's support for something we already have in mind. When it seems God is helping us toward our desired outcome, we cheer him on: "Warmer --- warmer!" But when it seems he is veering away from the goal we want, we warm, "Colder --- COLDER!" When it comes to praying for guidance, prayers like that are just plain backwards. We're not really asking God to guide us; we're asking God to let us guide him. Instead of looking to serve God, we're really trying to get him to serve us. James warns against this role reversal. When we ask for God's guidance, we must have his goals in mind, not ours. And we must ask and believe that God will answer. We must steer straight to avoid being tossed about by the wind. When you ask God to guide you, are you looking in his direction?여러분은 하나님께서 여러분을 안내하시도록 구할 때, 그의 방향을 바라보고 있습니까?PRYER (기도)God, what we need is for you to lead us. Please help us to get that straight. We pray in Jesus' name. Amen.

If any of you lacks wisdom --- ask God --- and it will be given. ㅡ James 1:5 너희 중에 누구든지 지혜가 부족하거든 --- 하나님께 구하라 그리하면 주시리라 (약 1:5)In this passage, James moves easily from the conviction of "not lacking anything" to the admission that we all may lack wisdom. Yes, unfortunately we all take turns when it comes to demonstrating foolishness. But James considers lack of wisdom to be a treatable condition! If we need wisdom, we should ask the Source of all wisdom for his generous provision. That requires humility. We are most likely to be wrong when we are most convinced we are right. Recognizing  our need for wisdom is a gift of grace. We often ask for wisdom in the same trouble areas of our life over and over again. It's as through we can't remember the wisdom we received just yesterday. A blind spot stays blank or a persistent stumbling block keeps putting us flat on our faces. Praying for wisdom in dealing with persistent temptation is likely a petition we will offer again and again. We might expect that the Lord will eventually lose patience with us. After all, we often lose patience with ourselves. But James reassures us that God doesn't become impatient. Nor does he say what others may be heard to mutter: "Why don't you ever learn? You are too foolish to bother with." Instead, God offers wisdom again and again - in the face of our foolishness. Are you asking for wisdom and receiving it generously? Thank God! PRAYER (기도)Lord, we ask you to be generous with us in our need for wisdom. Refresh us with your wisdom, again and again - and help us grow closer to you each day. In Jesus, Amen.

    OCHAugust 04, 2022 (약 1:1-4) TRIALS AND TEMPTATION 시련과 시험(유혹)
---You know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. (James 1:3)--- 너희 믿음의 시련이 인내를 만들어 내는 줄 너희가 앎이라 (약 1:3) Trials and temptations both have a similar impact on our lives. But they are significantly different. Trials arise from the challenges and crises of life. Temptations mainly arise from within our hearts, from our inner motivations. Trials are as numerous and varied as the people we meet and the places we visit. James's readers were suffering persecution that could potentially undermine their trust in the powerful providence of God. Temptations are like fishing lures to a hungry fish. The desires of our sinful human nature prompt us to do what we want, which often means rebelling against our Creator, seeking satisfaction apart from him. Both trials and temptations can erode our trust in the Lord and undermine our witness. But God triumphs over the impact of trials and gives us victory over temptations. The Lord leads us in pastures of plenty and beside quiet waters of contentment. God uses the real experiences of life to demonstrate his peace and power so that he is shown to be the Giver of "every good and perfect gift"(James 1:17). We praise our God for giving us trust in times of trial and resistance in times of temptation. God is able to satisfy all our needs through his great provision. PRAYER (기도)Good Shepherd, lead me according to your will today. May I trust you with all my being and find strength to resist temptations. I want to glorify you in all my ways. Amen.

    OCHJuly 26, 2022 (룻 4:15-22) NAOMI HAS A SON 나오미가 아들을 갖다
The women living there said: "Naomi has a son." Ruth was pregnant and gave birth, but the women exclaimed that Naomi had a son. Actually, this is the point of the story: not only did Ruth fill Naomi's emptiness with enough food, but she also provided a son to replace the ones Naomi lost. Isn't it strange that although Ruth did all of this, the women praised God and responded in the way they did to Naomi? Actually, that's another point of the story. Although he is seldom mentioned, God gets credit for bringing food back to Bethlehem. And in a departure from the normal way of reporting conception, God is reported as making it happen: "The Lord enabled her to conceive, and she gave birth to a son." Of course, Ruth and Boaz themselves had a hand in restoring Naomi's well-being; it could not have happened without them. Even so, a few well placed phrases remind God's people that there are no fields of ripened grain and no children without the Lord's blessing. God blesses the fruit of our labor and the fruit of the womb. Years later, Jesus, a descendant of this family, was born in Bethlehem with heaven's blessing. Through the story of Ruth we can see that Christ's birth is part of a family history that depends on God's abundant blessings. In God's world it is normal for him to fill the empty and redeem what was lost. 하나님의 세상에서, 하나님이 공허한 자들을 채우시고, 잃은 자들을 찾으시는 일이 일반적입니다.PRAYER (기도)"Praise be to the Lord." On this Lord's Day we are grateful to know that our Redeemer lives. Lord Jesus, live in our hearts today. Amen."

The women said to Naomi: "Praise be to the Lord, who this day has not left you without a guardian-redeemer." (룻 4:14)In every clan in Israel the head of the family was considered the guardian-redeemer, responsible for the well-being of the family. This person was expected to rescue, ransom, buy back, recover, or redeem anyone or any property that was in danger of being removed from the family by poverty, war, or death (Leviticus 25:25-55). 이 사람은 가난, 전쟁 또는 죽음으로 인해 가족으로부터 분리될 위험이 있는 사람이나, 재산을 구해주거나, 속량하거나, 구제하거나, 되 사주거나, 회복해 주거나, 구속해 줄 것으로 기대되는 사람입니다(레 25:25-55).Boaz became the guardian-redeemer for Naomi's family, and he was needed to fix two problems: a parcel of land had to be bought back (redeemed) , and Ruth needed a husband. Boaz had to do some clever bargaining to redeem the land and marry Ruth, but he was successful, and the story of Ruth ended happily. Ruth gave birth to a grandson for Naomi to preserve her family name. What's more, these people became ancestors of Israel's great King David - and of an even greater king, the King of the world, Jesus Christ. God, of course, is the real guardian-redeemer in the story. God sent Jesus ㅡ a descendent of Ruth and Boaz ㅡ to pay the redemption price for our freedom, to restore us to our home in God's family, to rescue us from the evil that threatens us, and to give us a permanent home with him. God's work in the world is always about redemption; it is always renewing, always loving, always good news. 그것은 항상 새롭게 하며, 항상 사랑스럽고, 항상 좋은 소식입니다.PRAYER (기도)Faithful God, thank you for coming to be our Redeemer so that you could restore us to your family. We know that our Redeemer lives! In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
